THE HISTORY

Peru Negro was founded on February 26, 1969, under the direction of Mr. Ronaldo Campos de la Colina in order to preserve Peru's African heritage. Ronaldo Campos created this group, made up of Isidore and Lalo Izquierdo, Rodolfo Arteaga, Sara and Pilar de la Cruz, Esperanza Campos, Linder Góngora, Lucila Campos, Victor Padilla,  Caitro Soto and his brother Orlando (Ronaldo cousins).

This group of dancers and musicians have performed around the world and have been designated as cultural ambassadors of Peru by the Peruvian government. Through their work, members of the dance company have recreated Afro Peruvian folk history of their ancestors who were stealthily removed from his native Africa and then forced into slavery in the 1500s by Spanish settlers in Peru.

Peru Negro with the program "Y la Tierra se hizo Nuestra" created by the poet Cesar Calvo, with the collaboration of Guillermo Thorndicke and Mrs. Chabuca Granda, won the 1969 Grand Prize in the Spanish American Festival of Dance and Song in Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
His artistry was recognized abroad. Presentations were made in Mexico, Morocco, Brazil, Cuba, Argentina, Spain, Panama and Ecuador.

In 1998, Ronaldo founded Peru Negrito, together with the children who traveled to the World Children's Festival in the

Netherlands and Austria, in 1999.
